£15,000 for a bottle of whisky!

After much speculation a bottle of Glenavon *** Special Liqueur whisky sold for almost £15,000 at the Bonhams sale of fine wine, port and spirits in London last night. Reputedly distilled sometime between 1851 and 1858, this is an exceptionally rare piece and one that raised a high level if interest in the collector’s market. It does raise a question though, why pay all that money for one bottle? It is extremely old and rare, but how will its new owner enjoy it? A fine work of art can be viewed and appreciated, but it is only by drinking whisky that you can really appreciate all the effort that went into creating it. I suspect that this bottle may never be opened, but who could blame the owner for that.

Back to reality, we are only a few days away from the launch of the new Whisky Connoisseur website – www.enjoywhisky.com – keep your eyes peeled over the next few days for it launching live online.

Getting ready for Chirstmas

Well things are certainly beginning to get busy here at The Whisky Connoisseur. Our November brochure has been received quite successfully, with a number of different single malts proving to be hits. Two items in particular seemed to take our customers fancy, the unusual Whisky Galore 10 year old vatted malt whisky and the Lauder’s 12 year old deluxe blend. The Lauder’s is especially interesting as it is usually reserved entirely for export, but I managed to obtain some stock and it has gone down well.

I am off now to check through the stockroom to make sure that everything is in place for the Christmas rush.

A new beginning

At last after several months and some long, long hours of hard toil the brand new website for The Whisky Connoisseur, www.enjoywhisky.com, is finally reaching the ‘Go live’ date. As Editor of the Whisky Connoisseur I am quite excited about the launch of this new venture for us. Our presence on the web has been limited up until now and the interactive element on offer to the customer was not very good. Now our new site will have far better search facilities, and a much more comprehensive range of products, everything from rare cask strength single malts to unusual liqueurs.  It will also offer a far more interesting online experience to our customers, there is more information available about Scotland’s single malts and the distilleries that produce them than we have ever featured before.

I hope that it proves as exciting and interesting for everyone else as it does to me.
